Addressing Europe’s Critical Skills Gap Crisis
The timing of this discussion is particularly urgent, as EU data reveals a significant skills crisis affecting European SMEs. According to the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion (November 2023), 78% of SMEs in the EU find it difficult to recruit workers with the right skills – a challenge that directly impacts business growth and competitiveness.
SMEs represent 99% of all businesses in the EU and employ around 100 million people, making them the backbone of Europe’s economy. However, the skills shortage has serious implications: 63% of SMEs report that skills gaps hold them back in their general business activities, whilst 45% say it prevents them from adopting digital technologies, and 39% say it is limiting their capacity for green economic activities.
“This data confirms exactly what we’re seeing with our customers,” said Johnsen. “The traditional approach to training simply isn’t working for modern SMEs. When nearly 8 out of 10 European businesses can’t find skilled workers, we need to fundamentally rethink how we deliver learning and development.”
