Celebrate Women’s Entrepreneurship Day 2025 with an Insightful Interview with our Hatla
So this November 19 is the 12th celebration of this special day. It was founded by Wendy Diamond, who also founded the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization (WEDO). We highlight the importance of this for the greater good, and ask uQualio co-founder Hatla Færch Johnsen how she got here as well.
What is Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Meant to Accomplish?
Meant to honor and empower women entrepreneurs, Women’s Entrepreneurship Day reminds us of their many contributions and continued needs. Women-led businesses drive economic growth and often contribute to the continued education, success and independence of women and girls worldwide.
Yes, the world is seeing more women entrepreneurs, but the work is not done. More voices, unique experiences and viewpoints can inspire more women-led start-ups. We can create more pathways to economic expansion and integrate Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) for positive change.
The Road to Financial Independence for Women Worldwide
All our paths are not the same. Working with a team comprised of many nationalities and experiences at uQualio, we see those differences. Celebrating women entrepreneurs reminds us that lower pay for women and fewer social safety nets can hinder security and even basic needs.
The nonprofit WEDO has a presence in 144 countries, and offers many free tools and resources to startups. Its mission is to uplift 4 billion women and girls worldwide, with a focus on empowering the 388 million living in poverty. Powerful stuff.
Let’s Ask Hatla About Becoming a Woman Entrepreneur (Our SaaSiest Dane!)
We knew we wanted to interview Hatla about Women’s Entrepreneurship Day 2025, as she is always so involved. Who better than our EdTech co-founder and the SaaSiest Woman of 2025 to provide insight? *Some responses are edited for brevity, and we will feature a video of our chat soon.
Hatla: I come from generations of entrepreneurs. After selling our family companies, it was an easy decision to build a new one – uQualio Video4Learning. Over my past work life, my various roles enabled me to learn how to run a company from the best.
Q: So we understand Women’s Entrepreneurship Day is this Wednesday, November 19. This seems quite relevant to you, as the Co-founder and CEO of uQualio since 2017. Could you describe a bit about your journey to becoming a woman entrepreneur?
A background in both business and psychology prompted the decision to make a learning platform that was straightforward to use. I’ve already seen things done the hard way, and wanted to save customers the blockades to accessing learning. I question things that came before, and use those experiences to continue to question how we do things all the time. This is a strength in entrepreneurship when the goal is not just to be profitable, but with an ethical purpose.
Q: We know from working with you that you have often been recognized as an entrepreneur. You and uQualio have received other honors and achievements as well. Were you always this confident and, well, sassy? Or did that part of you change over time?
Hatla: When I was younger, I was told I spoke too much, I was too passionate, I was taking up too much space. And now as a CEO the tables turned, and I’m not “enough.” I must be everything.
Funny how that happened. I used to think that I was “wrong” because I did things that others did not do. Being loud, not fitting in really. I had to learn I just had not found the right place for me. Being in this EdTech space now with a clear mission to make education accessible for everyone – I fit! Now I get to boldly and confidently speak about the importance of bringing positive change to the world!
Q: How do you think women taking part in entrepreneurship has changed business, and the world as a whole? How has this affected uQualio?
Hatla: Instead of everyone trying to be the same, I think it is important to use the differences we have (male or female) to become great. I am probably more masculine than most women and say my opinion. Instead of doing what others are doing, I do my own thing.
I love being on stage and in front – something I’ve learned that quite a few women dislike. Don’t know if my gender matters. But I know that money is not the most important part of my entrepreneurship – making positive change is. And that desire to make positive change, I think, could be a gender thing…
Q: Let’s wrap up this short interview with our final question. How will you be celebrating Women’s Entrepreneurship Day this year?
Hatla: First, I’ll point out that the celebration will be more than one day, because the work of a woman entrepreneur is every day!
On November 14th, I entered the pitch competition held by Tech Nordic Advocates. So I celebrated there, and afterwards we had dinner and networked with some of the other female founders.
I really believe we need an ‘old girls’ network to overcome bad statistics. As women comprise about 50% of the world’s population (49.73% in 2024), we need their good ideas so that products and services exist for all. Supporting each other and the amazing ideas female founders have is a way of doing this directly.
Learn from each other. Share best practices. Avoid the learned pitfalls. That is how we grow!
Since I’ve had practice pitching for this competition, let me end with this pitch. We must continue to make quality education available to all, including women, because education:
- increases wealth & reduces poverty,
- leads to better health,
- prevents inequality & injustice,
- drives sustainable growth, and
- helps us protect the planet.
Oh, and it makes people happy so they can spread good vibes!
